Peel Police Charge Youth in Vandalism of Tamil Genocide Memorial in Brampton

NEWS DERBY, April 02 2026, BRAMPTON, ON – Investigators from the Peel Regional Police Hate Crime Unit have arrested and charged a 14-year-old male from Brampton following the vandalism of the Tamil Genocide Memorial at Chinguacousy Park.

The incident occurred on Friday, March 20, 2026, when officers discovered the memorial had been defaced with derogatory spray-painted messages. Due to the sensitive nature of the target, the investigation was immediately prioritized by the Hate Crime Unit.

Following a thorough investigation, the youth was taken into custody on Tuesday, March 31, and faces two counts of

Mischief Over $5,000. Under the strict provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (Y.C.J.A.), the identity of the accused is protected and cannot be released to the public.

The teenager is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date. The vandalism of this memorial, which commemorates victims of the Tamil genocide, has caused significant concern throughout the Region of Peel, prompting local authorities to reaffirm their zero-tolerance policy toward hate-motivated crimes against cultural landmarks.
