B.C.’s police oversight body has launched an investigation into a fatal collision involving a Surrey police vehicle that occurred early on Christmas Day.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirmed that the incident happened shortly after 6 a.m. PT near the intersection of 108 Avenue and 132 Street, close to Whalley Athletic Park. According to investigators, officers from the Surrey Police Service were exiting a nearby gas station when their vehicle struck a female pedestrian.

Emergency responders transported the woman to hospital with critical injuries, but she later succumbed to those injuries, the IIO said. Her identity has not been released.

Surrey Police stated they will not comment further on the incident while the independent investigation is underway.

The IIO is automatically notified whenever police involvement is connected to a death or serious injury in British Columbia. The agency’s role is to determine whether police actions were lawful and appropriate under the circumstances.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact the Independent Investigations Office.
